This project has been divided into two new projects: The Swedish Forest Soil Inventory and the Swedish National Forest Inventory.
The Swedish National Forest Inventory has the task of describing the state and changes in Sweden's forests. The inventory gathers basic information on forests, soils and vegetation. It includes most aspects concerning soils, for example: soil types, soil chemistry including organic matter, water conditions and content of stones and boulders. Acidification, nitrogen deposition and the contribution by soils to climate change are some of the current issues dealt with. Regularly reported variables are: forest state, injuries, and growth, logging operations, new forest stand, and environmental assessment. Invented variables on permanent sampling plots include: position in the landscape, field vegetation, site conditions, soil sampling, assesment of soil characteristics, chemical analysis of soil in O-, B-, BC- and C-horizons.

Monitoring proceeds in five-years intervals. Forest State variable include list of tree species, wood dimension, maturity class, and tree age. The forest injuries variable are described by needle loss and tree injuries. The new forest stand are defined as an age of forest clearings and thicket stage. The environmental assessment includes an old growth forest, large trees and deciduous intermixtures, and coarse woody debris reporting. Invented variables on permanent sampling plots include field vegetation (state and development of 267 species and species groups, and coverage of 71 species and species groups), site condition (moisture class, moving soil water, plot exposition, plot surface inclination, site quality index, degree of influence from forestry operations, the cultural influences, boulder frequency), and soil characteristic by asses of type of soil, texture, humus form, degree of humification, thickness of humus layer. The soil sampling is up to 1 m depth on some permanent plots. Soil sampled from different horizons is analysed for pH, N, C, CEC, heavy metals. The position in the landscape are described in relation to county borders, municipality borders, roads, arable lands, and water. Chemical soil analysis of mineral soil from C-horizon include macro-elements, micro-elements and loss on ignition, and from O-, B-, BC- and C-horizon: pH, exchangeable Ca, Mg, Na, K; C, N, S.
